Calgary Flames to Retire Miikka Kiprusoff's Jersey Number
Franchise Leader to be Honoured on March 2
Pre-Game Ceremony Planned
The Calgary Flames will retire the jersey number of former goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff on March 2, the team announced on Monday. Kiprusoff, who played nine seasons in Calgary, is the franchise leader in wins, shutouts and goals against average. He will become the fourth player in Flames history to have his number retired, joining Lanny McDonald, Al MacInnis and Jarome Iginla.
The retirement ceremony will take place before the Flames' game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kiprusoff is expected to be in attendance and will be honoured with a video tribute and a speech by Flames general manager Brad Treliving.
"Miikka Kiprusoff was one of the most dominant goaltenders in the NHL during his time in Calgary," said Treliving. "He was a key part of our success and helped us reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2004. We are proud to retire his number and honour his legacy with the Flames."
Kiprusoff was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Sharks in 2000 and played two seasons with the team before being traded to the Flames in 2003. Kiprusoff quickly established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league, winning the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender in 2006 and 2007.
Kiprusoff retired from the NHL in 2013 after 11 seasons. He finished his career with a record of 319-218-74 with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage.
